JNS reports that Israel is working to create a security zone from the Golan Heights to south of Damascus in Syria. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, today, that the goals are protecting the Druze community in the Suwayda region as well as creating a humanitarian corridor for food, building materials, and medical supplies delivery and assistance.
Addressing crimes committed against Syrian Druze at the hands of state-sponsored militias, the PM said: “We are brothers. Would Israel not extend a hand to save our Druze brothers? And we acted. When I understood the magnitude of the disaster, we acted immediately.
“At the height of the atrocities, Sheikh Mowafaq Tarif called me and said: ‘The Jews in the Holocaust cried out for help and no one came. Israel must come.’ It was like an arrow straight to the heart. Because it is not only factually true, it is also morally true, humanly true,” he added.
The IDF had been caring out raids in the area south of Damascus this week on Tuesday and Wednesday targeting pro-Iranian terrorist groups. Israeli forces have also been stationed in Mount Hermon to project the northern border communities like the Golan and the Galilee. The IDF states that they will maintain their presence there while the security and aid zone is established.
The IDF reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Druze in Syria by establishing this security zone.
