Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced today that Israel will begin talks with Lebanon. Despite the ceasefire with Iran, fighting has continued in southern Lebanon against Hezbollah. Over the past two days, the IDF has launched strikes and raids targeting terror infrastructure, while Hezbollah rockets have hit communities in northern Israel and even triggered sirens in central regions. The Times of Israel reports that talks are set to begin next week and will include discussions on how Hezbollah can be disarmed.
In a later video message, Netanyahu hailed the potential for a “historic and sustainable peace agreement between Israel and Lebanon.”
In a message addressed to residents of northern Israel, the premier stressed that “there is no ceasefire in Lebanon,” noting that Israel was “continuing to strike Hezbollah with great force,” and would “not stop until we restore your security.”
“Our significant achievements both in Iran and against the axis of evil have brought about a historic change in Israel’s standing in the region,” he continued. “They have also led to changes in our relations with countries we did not have relations with before.”
While Lebanese officials have pushed for a ceasefire to enable such talks, Hezbollah has continued exchanging fire with IDF forces overnight. This morning, the group fired a rocket toward the southern city of Ashdod, setting off alarms and triggering interceptor missiles. A home in Misgav Am was also hit. No injuries or fatalities were reported.
Hezbollah was not part of the ceasefire with Iran, according to Israel and the United States, as the Iran-backed proxy has continued to threaten Israel’s northern communities. The Iranian regime has stated that continued fighting would render any peace talks void. Israel and the United States hope to address this in the coming week.
