The Fellowship’s With Dignity and Fellowship program supports one of the most vulnerable groups of people in Israel –the elderly. About 16,000 Israelis in their 70s, 80s, 90s, and even 100s are provided with essential aid like food, medicine, care, and the most precious resource of all –comfort and dignity. These elderly Jews come from nearly every continent on aliyah to live among their brothers and sisters in the Holy Land and have plenty of stories and secrets to share.
Asanka is an 89-year-old Israeli who made aliyah from Ethiopiain the 80s, just about 40 years ago. What she had to share is her love of cooking traditional Ethiopian dishes with teff flour, which is a gluten-free grain that comes from the African nation.
Asanka had a difficult time getting teff between 2006 and 2015 when the Ethiopian government banned the export of teff in fears of a national shortage. Still, very few Israeli grocery stores carry teff, and it often costs more than regular grain. The Fellowship is proud to be able to provide teff flour with the aid she receives from With Dignity and Fellowship to continue her essential diet and cooking the food she loves.
“The flour you bring helps me so much,” Asanka shares. “It allows me to eat the food I’m used to. I wouldn’t be able to buy it without the help of The Fellowship. I’m grateful for this help.”
