U.S. Ambassador to Israel and friend of The Fellowship Mike Huckabee announced that construction will soon begin on the new, permanent U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem. The Jerusalem Post reports that the project follows President Donald Trump’s 2017 recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Huckabee made the announcement at a Sukkot reception for foreign diplomats hosted in the capital over the weekend.
“We will soon be breaking ground on our property to begin the construction of the US embassy that will be our permanent home rather than being spread out all over the country,” Huckabee told the gathering.
Israel and the United States signed an agreement July 1 allocating the Allenby Compound in southern Jerusalem for the permanent embassy. Israel had approved the site in March.
Huckabee acknowledged that construction could take years but described the project as a long-term American commitment to the city.
“It is our commitment as the United States of America and a partner of Israel to say that we are going to put a permanent imprint in this city,” he said.
Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion said that more countries should move their embassies to the city. Of the 97 countries that have established embassies in Israel, 89 have them in Tel Aviv.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Israel’s enemies may try to carry out attacks leading up to next month’s elections in Israel. The IDF also reported today that a Hamas commander was eliminated in northern Gaza in recent strikes. A financier for the terror group was also killed.
