“God has ascended amid shouts of joy,
    the Lord amid the sounding of trumpets.
Sing praises to God, sing praises;
    sing praises to our King, sing praises.
For God is the King of all the earth;
    sing to him a psalm of praise.”
(Psalm 47:5-7)

In this photo taken in 1941, World War II has already begun threatening those around the globe, and Jewish people across Europe have already begun facing the Holocaust. But this Jewish soldier in the Holy Land sounds the shofar – the biblical trumpet made from a ram’s horn – to ring in Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) and sing to God a song of praise.

As our Jewish friends prepare to celebrate Rosh Hashanah and begin the High Holy Days, we say Shanah Tovah.
