In this photo taken in 1959, two of Israel’s founders and guiding lights—Golda Meir and David Ben-Gurion—share a lighter moment at a political conference at Mann Auditorium in Tel Aviv.

Historical side note: Opened two years before this photograph was taken—and now called Heichal HaTarbut—the venue is still the city’s largest concert hall, and its inaugural event featured pianist Arthur Rubinstein being conducted by the great Leonard Bernstein.
