JNS reports that Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced support for a Hezbollah disarmament plan approved by Lebanon on Monday. The plan calls for the Lebanese Armed Forces to disarm the Iran-backed terrorist group by the end of this year.
“If the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) take the necessary steps to implement the disarmament of Hezbollah, Israel will engage in reciprocal measures, including a phased reduction of IDF presence in coordination with the U.S.-led security mechanism,” said Netanyahu.
“Now is the time for both Israel and Lebanon to move forward in a spirit of cooperation, focusing on the shared objective of disarming Hezbollah and promoting the stability and prosperity of both nations,” the statement concluded.
Based on Netanyahu’s meeting on August 18 with Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, IDF troops will also remain at five outposts in Southern Lebanon to continue protection for communities in northern Israel for an “indefinite” period. The Lebanese Cabinet had also voted on August 7 to disarm Hezbollah.
The Israeli government has called the U.S.-backed disarmament a significant step toward a more stable future and shalom, peace, between the two nations.
