After the IDF captured a senior Hamas official earlier this week, concerns are mounting that the terror group could launch an attack as the High Holy Days and elections in both the U.S. and Israel approach. The Jerusalem Post reports that Hamas may use this period to demonstrate its remaining strength and expand its attacks beyond Gaza to other parts of Israel.
Ahead of Rosh Hashanah next weekend, a situational assessment will be held to examine the possibility of a targeted reinforcement of forces in the Gaza Strip. The move could include sending messages to Hamas that any activity against IDF troops or the Israeli home front would lead to an unusual IDF response.
The defense establishment has declined to comment on the arrest of the head of Hamas’s internal security apparatus, but officials said he is a key figure in understanding the organization’s behind-the-scenes activities. According to the officials, his interrogation could help answer critical questions regarding operational plans, protected individuals, methods and tactics, and field commanders who were recently appointed to sensitive positions.
This week, Israel issued a similar warning about potential attacks from Iran as the regime continues to target military bases in the region, with Kuwait being the most recent target. On the northern front, the IDF confirmed that it neutralized underground Hezbollah infrastructure in the Ali Taher Ridge area after the terror group launched drones at troops the previous day.
The U.S. midterm elections are set for November 3, while Israel’s legislative elections are scheduled for October 27. All 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and 35 seats in the U.S. Senate will be contested, along with all 120 seats in the Knesset. These elections reflect the democratic values shared by the U.S. and Israel, and their outcomes could help determine the direction of ongoing and future conflicts in the Middle East.
