U.S. President Donald Trump said that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a 10-day ceasefire. The Times of Israel reports that the agreement was announced yesterday following a meeting in Washington on Tuesday. However, Hezbollah and the IDF continued to exchange rocket fire, injuring three people in northern Israeli communities. The ceasefire has since taken effect after the IDF confirmed it struck over 380 Hezbollah targets yesterday.
The ceasefire appeared to largely hold throughout the night, though Lebanon’s army accused Israel of violating it by intermittently shelling several southern Lebanese villages. It also called on citizens to hold off on returning to southern villages and towns. There was no immediate comment from the IDF.
“I hope Hezbollah acts nicely and well during this important period of time. It will be a GREAT moment for them if they do. No more killing. Must finally have PEACE!” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post not long after the truce began, which he followed up with another declaring the ceasefire “may have been a historic day for Lebanon. Good things are happening!”
Tuesday’s meeting in Washington was historic, marking the first time in over 30 years that Israeli and Lebanese officials met in person. Trump said he has spoken with both Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to discuss a permanent agreement.
The news caught Israel’s security cabinet by surprise, as there was no meeting to approve the decision—one reason some fighting continued yesterday. Still, the IDF remains on high alert along Lebanon’s border.
