What does “Chet“ mean in Hebrew?
“Chet” (חֵטְא), a Hebrew word often translated as “sin,” is one of the most important words in Jewish thought. However, the Hebrew concept of chet carries a deeper and more nuanced meaning than many English translations suggest.
Rather than describing a person as inherently bad, chet refers to missing the mark, making a mistake, or straying from the path that God intends. Jewish tradition teaches that every person falls short at times, but everyone also has the opportunity to learn, grow, and return to God through teshuvah (repentance).
