On this date in 1886, David Ben-Gurion was born. He would go on to be a leader in the Zionist movement, in the creation of the modern Jewish state, and Israel’s first prime minister.

In this photo taken on July 1, 1967, in the wake of Israel’s victory in the Six-Day War, Ben-Gurion visits the Western Wall. He surely summed up the importance of the newly reunified Holy City of Jerusalem: “No city in the world, not even Athens or Rome, ever played as great a role in the life of a nation for so long a time, as Jerusalem has done in the life of the Jewish people.”

Shabbat shalom, friends.
