Photo Friday: It Was Winter
Stand for Israel | December 20, 2019
“Then came the Festival of Dedication…It was winter…” (John 10:22)
This photo is of German soldiers celebrating Hanukkah in Poland during a world war. Of course this isn’t World War II, when Germany was set on exterminating the Jews of Germany, and all of Europe. No, this picture was taken in 1916, during World War I, when many of the Germans fighting for their country were Jewish (many of these veterans would later be murdered during the Holocaust). And just as these fighting men celebrated the Festival of Lights more than a century ago, we wish our Jewish friends a Happy Hanukkah beginning this Sunday. Shabbat shalom, friends.
