Hezbollah Fires Missiles at IDF
Stand for Israel | September 1, 2019
Conflict has arisen on Israel’s tense northern border with Lebanon after a Hezbollah attack on the IDF. The Times of Israel’s Judah Ari Gross and Adam Rasgon report that the Lebanese terror group launched anti-tank missiles at an IDF base and vehicles, confirming a hit and causing an Israeli response:
The Hezbollah terror group fired several anti-tank guided missiles at an army base and military vehicles in northern Israel Sunday afternoon, the Israel Defense Forces said, adding that more information would be released shortly.
The military said several of the missiles struck their targets, prompting retaliatory Israeli attacks.
The Iran-backed Hezbollah took responsibility for the missile strikes, saying in a statement that its fighters “destroyed an ‘Israeli’ military vehicle on the Avivim barracks road [in northern Israel]… and injured those in it…”
“The IDF returned fire at the sources of the launches and at targets in southern Lebanon,” the army said in a statement…
A Fellowship staff member in Israel provides some context to the current situation:
Ever since the 2006 Second Lebanon War, there hasn’t been a large-scale escalation between Israel and Hezbollah. There have been relatively minor events, but not all -out war.
During this time, Hezbollah has accumulated a huge stockpile of rockets. There are not only more rockets and missiles, but they are more sophisticated and accurate, and can hit more targets.
The estimation is that the next war with Hezbollah would be much more severe, with many more casualties, with much more destruction, than the 2006 war.
A few days ago there was an attack in Beirut, Lebanon’s capital — an attack that was said to have been carried out by the IDF — against Hezbollah targets. Hezbollah is a proxy of Iran, which has been sending armaments and material to make armaments through Syria to Hezbollah in order to one day attack Israel.
If there is an escalation, it could easily be far worse than anything we’ve seen so far.
Hezbollah has promised to retaliate against Israel for the recent attack in Beirut. Most people say that Hezbollah does not want all-out war, but in this kind of volatile situation you can never know what will happen — especially now, just a couple of weeks before elections in Israel.
Please pray for the people of Israel in these difficult and dangerous times.
