Project Spotlight: Operation Winter Warmth

The Fellowship recently launched our annual Winter Warmth initiative, through which we provide heating checks and warm blankets to needy elderly throughout Israel.

More than 24,000 elderly will receive checks through Operation Winter Warmth in the amount of 350 shekels ($90) each, allowing them to survive the winter without being forced to choose between paying rent, purchasing food or medicine, or heating their home.

The project was launched last week with a ceremony in Nahariya, Israel, after which Yael and 50 volunteers from The Fellowship’s Scholarships for Druze program delivered checks and blankets to local elderly.

Among the people Yael visited were Maria, an 87-year-old widow who made aliyah(immigrated to Israel) from the former Soviet Union in 1990. Maria has a difficult time getting around and relies on a walker. Her children live far away, and she survives on a small pension. The heating grant and blanket from The Fellowship will ensure her survival this winter.

Yael also visited Tita and Zakin, a couple who immigrated to Israel from Tunisia in 1972. Zakin is 93 and his wife, Tita, is 85. They both suffer from health and mobility problems, and Zakin is confined to a wheelchair. The couple subsists on a small national pension, but it is rarely enough to provide for all their needs. The winter help from The Fellowship provides relief and the comfort of being cared for in their final years – the same hope that all the recipients of Operation Winter Warmth experience, thanks to our generous supporters.
