U.S. Senate Proposes Bill to Recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s Capital

Legislation introduced this week in the U.S. Congress would recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and would also seek to move the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Another bill in Congress condemning last month’s U.N. anti-Israel resolution is expected to pass with bipartisan support.

Also this week in Israel in the News:

  • In the wake of the U.N. resolution that called Israeli settlement-building in the West Bank illegal, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office claims that the U.S. orchestrated the anti-Israel vote — and some U.S. congressmen agree.
  • In Turkey, more than 20 suspects have been arrested in connection with a New Year’s Eve shooting that left 39 dead. ISIS has claimed responsibility, and the main suspect, who remains at large, is believed to have received combat training from the terrorist group.
  • With poverty and anti-Semitism on the rise in Venezuela, Jews are immigrating to Israel for a better life. The Fellowship‘s On Wings of Eagles program is helping make that a reality for hundreds of impoverished Jews there.
  • While Christian population is sharply declining elsewhere in the Middle East, the Christian community in Israel is thriving. Israeli President Reuven Rivlin recently met with Christians leaders to discuss peace and religious liberty in Israel.

This week’s Israel in the News Perspective features The Fellowship‘s Yonit Rothchild with an Israeli’s response to the recent U.N. vote.
