Seventy years after Israel declared its independence, the United States officially opened the new U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem — the first country to do so. Two days later, Guatemala became the second country to open its embassy in Jerusalem.

  • Meanwhile, U.S. Congressmen applauded President Trump, saying that by moving the embassy to Jerusalem the President fulfilled a promise that his predecessors also made, but did not keep.
  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the move “a glorious day for Israel.”
  • In response to the embassy opening, Hamas called for protests on the Israel-Gaza border that resulted in more than 60 Palestinians killed and more than 2,700 wounded. Hamas leaders later acknowledged that at least 50 of those killed were members of the terrorist group.
  • U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley defended Israel’s handling of the clashes at the border, asking, “Who among us would accept this type of activity on your border?”
  • Fellowship founder and President Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein credited the Christian community for playing a “critical” role in ensuring the U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

This week’s Israel in the News Perspective features The Fellowship‘s Ami Farkas on Israelis’ response to the embassy opening.
