Photo Friday: From the Horrors of the Holocaust to the Holy Land

After World War II ended, many of the Jews who survived the Holocaust had no family left, no homes to return to, and seemingly no lives to resume. This tragedy especially affected Jewish children, left alone and adrift in the world without parents or loved ones. Some of these children found love and new lives aboard the SS Mataroa. The ship carried many young survivors to then-British-mandate Palestine where they had family.

In this photo, two children who survived Auschwitz-Birkenau – as evidenced by the tattoos on their arms – prepare for their new lives as the Mataroa docks in the Haifa port.

On this, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we remember the millions of lives lost during the Holocaust, praise God for those who were saved, and continue our mission of providing care and dignity to the elderly survivors still struggling today. Shabbat shalom, friends.
