Prior to addressing the U.N. General Assembly, President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met to address issues of mutual concern. Topping the agenda was the Iran nuclear deal. Trump also professed his optimism that a path to peace in the Middle East could be found, while Netanyahu called America’s position toward Israel “unequivocal” and “strong.”

Also this week in Israel in the News:

  • In his remarks to the U.N., Trump strongly criticized North Korea for its missile tests and called the Iran nuclear deal “an embarrassment to the United States.” Netanyahu also reiterated Israel’s position on the deal: “Fix it or nix it.”
  • Control of the Gaza Strip, along Israel’s southern border, could return to the Palestinian Authority. On Sunday, the terror group Hamas, who currently controls Gaza, agreed to relinquish the territory back to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
  • With the High Holy Days beginning at sundown on Wednesday, the Jewish community in Houston was scrambling to get their synagogues ready following the destruction from Hurricane Harvey.
  • Following decades of military cooperation, the U.S. opened its first permanent military base inside Israel this week — an air defense base in the Negev desert.
