Israel Sets Early Elections for 2019

Israel Sets Early Elections for 2019

The Israeli government announced this week that it will move national elections from November to April after the Knesset (Israel’s parliament) voted to dissolve early. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is leading in the polls to retain his position.

  • Israel carried out a series of airstrikes on Iranian targets near the Syrian capital city of Damascus earlier this week, causing significant impact near the country’s largest airport.
  • Following President Trump’s recent decision to withdraw American troops from Syria, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has pledged to fill the void, saying “we will continue to act in Syria to prevent Iran’s effort to militarily entrench itself against us.”
  • As part of Operation Northern Shield, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has begun destroying Hezbollah terror tunnels found along the Israel-Lebanon border.
  • By the end of 2018, Israel is expected to welcome a record-breaking four million tourists – a 13 percent increase over 2017.
  • Thousands of Christian pilgrims and tourists gathered in Bethlehem on Monday for one of the largest Christmas Eve celebrations in years.

This week’s Israel in the News Perspective features The Fellowship‘s Founder and President Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein with an important message for the New Year.
