Frank Lloyd Wright (whose 153rd birthday is today) designed many buildings still treasured today (we at Stand for Israel are big architecture buffs, whether it’s in the Holy Land or not). But he only designed one Jewish house of worship.

Startling and stately. Translucent and towering. Modern and immortal. A house of peace and a house of God.

Outside Philadelphia stands Beth Sholom Congregation, a synagogue whose name means “house of peace.” Wright designed the building in 1959, and it still provides a place for people of faith to this day. The synagogue has been called a “startling, translucent, modernist evocation of an ancient temple” – fitting since it allows today’s children of God to worship the same as their ancestors did in Temple days.

Happy Birthday, Frank Lloyd Wright, a man who envisioned so many beautiful buildings and architectural treasures, one of them this house of peace.
