“When my life was ebbing away,
    I remembered you, LORD,
and my prayer rose to you,
    to your holy temple.

“Those who cling to worthless idols
turn away from God’s love for them.
But I, with shouts of grateful praise,
    will sacrifice to you.
What I have vowed I will make good.
I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the LORD.’”
(Jonah 2:7-9)

In 1973, Israel’s enemies attacked on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement and the holiest day on the Jewish calendar. In this photo taken on Yom Kippur, IDF reservists are called up, many of them making the ultimate sacrifice in order to protect the people of Israel. And many of them, surely, had in their hearts these words from the Book of Jonah – the biblical book read in the Temple on Yom Kippur, whose story is one of repentance and forgiveness, themes on this holiest of days. God’s people remembered Him. And He certainly remembered His people, and does for all time. Shabbat shalom, friends.
