Violence Escalates on Israel-Gaza Border with Mortar Attacks

In the largest barrage since 2014, more than 100 rocket and mortar attacks were fired from Gaza into Southern Israel earlier this week. Israel responded to the rocket attacks with airstrikes against 35 Hamas and Islamic Jihad targets, including training camps and a massive smuggling tunnel. A ceasefire has been in place since Wednesday.

  • The barrage of rocket attacks began early Tuesday, with one mortar attack striking a kindergarten playground just 30 minutes before parents were to drop off their children.
  • Israeli Ambassador to the U.N., Danny Danon, urged the U.N. Secretary-General and the Security Council to condemn Hamas for Tuesday’s attacks. He said the rockets were “part of a violent and coordinated attack against Israel.”
  • Also, U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., Nikki Haley, called the attacks “a clear escalation of violence” that was intended to “maximize civilian casualties.”
  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blamed Hamas for the attacks, and warned of a stronger military response to any resumption of rocket barrages.

This week’s Israel in the News Perspective features Yael Eckstein on protecting Israel’s children.
