“I come to the garden alone,
While the dew is still on the roses…”

Those lyrics, from the beloved hymn “In the Garden” written in 1912 by C. Austin Miles, surely invoke images of Gethsemane, the garden at the foot of the Mount of Olives where Jesus prayed in the Christian Bible.

In the above photo from 1890, a colorized photograph taken even before the hymn was written, we see the beloved Garden of Gethsemane.

And this rendition of “In the Garden” by Elvis Presley (born on January 9 eighty-eight years ago) certainly further conjures images of this Holy Land site.
