Israelis You Should Know: Doron Matalon

Name: Doron Matalon

Age: 21

Known for: Matalon was named Miss Israel in 2014.

About her: Doron Matalon was born in Beti Aryeh-Ofarim, where she grew up with her parents and her older brother, who is an officer in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). After completing her schooling, she served for two years as a sergeant in the Northern Command of the IDF.

She said her aunt signed her up for the 2014 Miss Israel contest without telling her, and that she initially did not plan to compete. However, after much persuasion, she decided to enter the competition, which she won.

Matalon plans to compete in the Miss Universe pageant with more than 80 contestants next week. Ahead of the competition, a photograph of Matalon appearing with Miss Lebanon caused an online uproar, as many Lebanese residents were angry that the picture had been taken. Miss Lebanon vocalized that she did not wish for the pair to be photographed together.

Matalon responded to the incident by saying, “I hope for change and I hope for peace between us and even just for three weeks, just between me and her… We need to remember that we represent the country and the people, not the government and not the political issues.”

Matalon does modeling work in addition to competing in pageants, and according to her Miss Universe profile, she has also spent a lot of time as a volunteer taking care of an autistic child.

Her own words about Israel: “Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East and all the citizens of Israel have equal rights. Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and it is a very beautiful and unique. It is the holy city for Christians, Muslims and Jews.”
