Asher: Grateful to be living in Israel

Nineteen-year-old Asher remembers his early childhood in Ethiopia as a constant struggle to survive. His parents divorced when he was six years old and his mother worked tirelessly to feed Asher and his siblings. "From the time my parents got divorced my mother used to say that we needed to get to Israel," he says. "She was certain that once we got to Israel, things would be better."

Two years later, the family left their village and made their way to the city of Gondar. But they didn't make it to Israel as quickly as they had hoped. In fact, for ten long years they waited in Gondar, praying for the opportunity to return to their biblical homeland.

Those years were extremely difficult for Asher. "I only went to school for four years," he says. "I wanted to continue learning, but we had no money. My mother was sick and couldn't work. I had to work in a garage in order to help the family survive."

The day Asher received word that he was finally coming to Israel was the greatest day of his life. "We had been celebrating for others for so long and it was finally our turn," he says. "I can’t describe how happy we were." Thanks to The Fellowship’s On Wings of Eagles program, Asher and his family were brought to Israel and moved into an absorption center where they were taught Hebrew and given the skills they needed to adjust to their new life.

Asher is now studying automotive repair but hopes to one day complete his education. "There are a lot of jobs and I know everything will be good," he says. "It was a long wait to get to Israel, but it was worth it."

Asher is eternally grateful to the The Fellowship's donors for making his dream come true. "It's so good to know that there are Christians who care about us and who are helping us come to Israel," he says. "Thank you for making it possible for me to live my life as a proud Jew in Israel."
