An On Wings of Eagles Success Story

Ulegar Bero: Blinded by Grief

Ulegar Bero was an elderly Jew living in the Gondar area of Ethiopia. Her husband died after only a few years of marriage, but she was comforted by the presence of her only child, a beloved son.

But when army representatives came to Ulegar’s village, picking boys from the street to join the military, they took Ulegar’s son. Though she hoped and prayed for the best, she never saw him again.

Ulegar was shattered. She cried so much that her eyes became inflamed and, finally, infected. It would have been a simple ailment to treat, but with no doctor in her village it grew worse, until, in a cruel twist of fate, Ulegar’s eyesight was lost forever she had, quite literally, been blinded by her grief.

The Jewish families in Ulegar’s village were determined to find a better life in Israel. When they went to the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa to wait for an available flight to Israel, they took Ulegar with them. Finally, an On Wings of Eagles-sponsored freedom flight brought Ulegar to Israel, the land she had longed for since she was a little girl.

Ulegar's life, which has seen more hardship than many of us could possibly imagine, has turned around thanks to On Wings of Eagles. Please give a gift to Wings today to help us continue this vital program that brings Jews home to the Holy Land.
