Asher: From Desert to Heaven on Earth
As a boy in Ethiopia, Asher longed for Israel. “It was described as heaven on earth,” he recalls. The dream of aliyah drove Asher and his family to risk their lives, walking miles to the Sudanese border. “We walked in places no human had ever walked before,” said Asher. “We had to hide from wild animals. Many died along the way.”
When they finally made it to Israel, dreams gave way to harsh reality. New food, language and customs caused severe culture shock for the family. Asher’s father struggled to find work, while Asher finished school despite the obstacles.
After serving in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Asher faced another grim reality unemployment. He wanted to study at “Machon Lev,” Israel’s college of technology, but had no way to afford it.
“I was ready to give up,” Asher said. “Then I received a letter telling me that thanks to a generous donation from The Fellowship’s On Wings of Eagles program to help Ethiopian students, I would receive the scholarship I needed.”
Because of Wings’ investment in klitah for new immigrants, Asher will soon have a degree in accounting. All he needed, it turned out, was the willingness to work hard and the tools for achievement that Wings provides!
You can help provide those tools to more immigrants like Asher through a generous gift to On Wings of Eagles. Please give today — and help more exiled children of Israel realize the promise of life in their biblical homeland.
