Anna: A Godsend for a Needy Family

It was supposed to be a joyous time. Anna had just given birth to a son, Vitaly, and was reveling in the new addition to her family.

But when she returned from maternity leave to her job as an assistant at a university-a job she’d been assured would be waiting for her—she was told her position had been eliminated. The economic crisis in Latvia had made job cuts a necessity, as well as cuts to her maternity leave payment and the government stipend for Vitaly and his 13-year-old sister, Natasha.

Because the children’s father comes in and out of their lives and doesn’t support them financially, Anna has been struggling to provide for her family. They live in a shabby two-room apartment in a neighborhood where violent crime and gang activity are common. The money that remains after rent is paid is far too little to cover the cost of winter heating bills, food and clothing for the children, diapers and baby formula, and transportation to and from school.

The Fellowship’s Isaiah 58 program is a godsend for this needy family. Funding through Isaiah 58 ensures that the children receive adequate nutrition by providing food cards they can use at a local supermarket, coupons for baby formula, and vouchers for hot school lunches for Natasha.
