Smadar: Getting By With the Help of Guardians
Smadar, 35, is a strong woman and mother of three whose family recently received devastating news. While Smadar was pregnant with her third child, she found out she had a brain tumor. “From that moment on my world was turned upside down,” she says. Smadar's doctors performed an immediate c-section and then brain surgery to remove her tumor.
Though she is recovering from her life-threatening condition, Smadar and her husband are now facing devastating medical bills, as well as coping with the day-to-day expense of providing for three children. Smadar’s husband, who had supported the family as a truck driver, was forced to quit his job in order to care for his ailing wife and children. “My husband has been an absolute saint,” Smadar says. “But since he stopped working, our income has consisted solely of my disability stipend. This is just not enough to pay the rent, utilities, and buy food and clothing.”
With nowhere to turn, and paralyzed with the fear of not being able to afford food for her children, Smadar went to Israel's Department of Welfare to plead for help. To her relief, a social worker told her about The Fellowship’s Guardians of Israel Special Needs Fund that aids people in crisis situations. The very next day, her family received assistance from The Fellowship that enabled her to pay her overdue electric bill and buy food.
Smadar has nothing but gratitude for the Guardians of Israel that came to her rescue during her time of need. “Thank God there are people like you, Christians, who are saving the lives of ordinary Jews like me and my family,” she says. “I have learned that I have a whole family of Fellowship supporters that care about me and are there for me when I need them. We’re going to get by due to your help.”
