Imagine being forced to start your life a new—at age seven. This is what happened to Marko after his mother died. He had no immediate family, and was sent to live in a home for orphaned children.
The first few years were extremely difficult. Marko’s grief made him defiant and uncooperative. He fought frequently with staff, and refused to do any of his chores. He suffered from an undiagnosed learning disability, and did poorly in school.
Fortunately, the home where Marko was sent is unique. The Tuvia Community, funded by The Fellowship’s Guardians of Israel program, offers a loving, protective environment to children in need—a place where boys and girls who have suffered emotional trauma can heal.
Staff at the home treated Marko with great compassion and understanding. Their patience and firm guidance taught him to act more responsibly and take seriously the need to study. He came to enjoy the work he did on the farm associated with the orphanage, and developed a positive attitude. He also began treatment for his disability, and his school performance improved.
Marko now looks forward to graduating from high school and serving his country in the military. He knows how close he came to life on the streets, and is grateful to those who set him on the right path. “I don’t know where I would be without this place that has been my home since I was a little boy,” he says. “I didn’t appreciate it at first, but over the years I’ve seen how lucky I am to be here.”
