Shmuel, now eighteen years old, made aliyah with his family from Ethiopia several years ago. Things were very difficult at first. Shmuel’s mother could not find steady work, and they lived in poverty.
In the meantime, Shmuel developed serious behavioral problems. He was disruptive in school and did not even try to succeed at his studies. He began hanging around with the wrong crowd—and his mother feared he was headed down the path of delinquency.
Then Shmuel’s mother found out about a boarding school funded by The Fellowship’s Guardians of Israel program. Here, immigrant youth at risk are taught about the Jewish faith and Israeli history to strengthen their ties to their new home, and undergo leadership training to prepare them for their military service.
At the school, Shmuel was able to get the guidance and discipline he so desperately needed. Over a period of months, he was transformed from a boy who delighted in challenging authority and being disruptive into a responsible young man eager to serve his country.
Shmuel admits that he has changed dramatically. "I have improved so much," he says. "I've learned to set goals for myself. I want to succeed in the army, and maybe even become an officer. I hope the people who helped me can see me some day so they can see the results of their efforts!"
