Next week Jews celebrate Tu B’Shvat, a holiday also known as the New Year of the Trees. As Jews throughout the world eat fruit and plant trees to commemorate this day, they also offer praise for the land of Israel – “A land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey” (Deuteronomy 8:8). This week, we join with them in thanking God for the Holy Land, and for the beauty of His creation the world over.
- Praise God for the splendor of His Holy Land and for providing us with a world that is a feast for our tables and our eyes. “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory” (Isaiah 6:3).
- On the heels of International Holocaust Remembrance Day last Friday, pray for Holocaust survivors around the globe, many of whom now face the threats of poverty, hunger, and isolation. “Stand up in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the Lord” (Leviticus 19:32).
- Please pray for Christians in the Middle East, who face increasing threats to their faith, their safety, and their very existence. “Let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you” (Psalm 5:11).
- Pray for Egypt, where the Muslim Brotherhood and the hardline Islamist al-Nour party won a majority of parliament seats during recent elections. Pray that these new leaders will turn from their harsh stance toward Israel and people of other faiths and follow the path of peace. “May there be peace within your walls and security within your citadels” (Psalm 122:7).
- As Iran continues to pursue nuclear capabilities and tensions in the region rise, pray that sanctions and diplomatic efforts from the West will bring Iran’s quest to a swift, peaceful end. “He thwarts the plans of the crafty, so that their hands achieve no success” (Job 5:12).
