Spin the Dreidel

The dreidel is a four-sided top used for the traditional game played by children (and adults) during Hanukkah.

A Hebrew letter is shown on each side of the dreidel – nun, gimel, hay and shin. They form an acronym for the Hebrew words, Ness gadol haya sham, which means "A great miracle happened there". Each player gets an equal number of coins, nuts, candies, stones or other small objects. The game begins with each putting an agreed number of the objects into a central pot.

Everyone takes turns spinning the dreidel and then acts in accord with the letter that shows when the dreidel falls. Spinning gimel allows the player to take all the objects out of the pot. Shin means the player must put an object in the pot. Hay gives the player half the objects from the pot. Nun means do nothing.

When the pot is emptied out, each player contributes an object and the game continues.
