Photo Friday: All You Philistines

Wail, you gate! Howl, you city!
    Melt away, all you Philistines!

A cloud of smoke comes from the north,
and there is not a straggler in its ranks.
What answer shall be given
to the envoys of that nation?

"The LORD has established Zion,
and in her his afflicted people will find refuge."
(Isaiah 14:31-32)

The Philistines are perhaps the most villainous enemies of Israel found in the Bible. But, until recently, archaeological findings on them have been scarce, leaving Philistine history a bit of a mystery. Now, however, a team excavating the ancient city of Ashkelon - a Philistine stronghold - has unearthed a cemetery that will shed light on not only the Philistine people, but on biblical history as a whole. Shabbat shalom, friends.
