Much of the credit for the decline in terrorist attacks against Israelis can be given to the Shin Bet, Israel's security agency. Yediot Achronot's Itay Blumenthal reports that PM Netanyahu has credited "Israel's unseen shield" for thwarting over 400 attacks in the past year alone:
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday presented the Prime Minister’s Prize for operational-intelligence achievements in 2015-2016 for six groundbreaking operations and handed out certificates of merit to the men and women of the Shin Bet who led them. The ceremony was held at the Israeli security agency’s headquarters...
“The operations that were chosen to receive the award are the most unique, sophisticated and creative kind carried out by the Shin Bet in the past two years in the operational, intelligence, technological and cyber field—in close and distant arenas," the statement continued.
The winning operations included the development of sophisticated technologies for handling the wave of lone-wolf terrorism, implementing a process to attain access to groundbreaking intelligence information, uncovering and thwarting dangerous terror infrastructures working to carry out attacks, and developing surreptitious techniques and operational tools to combat the variety of enemies the Shin Bet faces.
Prime Minister Netanyahu said during the ceremony that “the General Security Service carries out hundreds of operations a year that constitute a defensive wall against the terror working to harm the security of Israel and its citizens. The men and women of the service who took part in these operations demonstrated exceptional creativity, boldness, sophistication and courage. The quality intelligence provided by these operations is priceless..."
