Photo Friday: The Beasts of the Field

Motek and Varda, elephants at Ramat Gan Zoo in Israel (Photo: instagram/israelinusa)

"In that day I will make a covenant for them
    with the beasts of the field, the birds in the sky
    and the creatures that move along the ground...
I will betroth you to me forever;
    I will betroth you in righteousness and justice,
    in love and compassion.
I will betroth you in faithfulness,
    and you will acknowledge the LORD."
(Hosea 2:18-20)

The above Asian elephants at Israel's Ramat Gan Zoo are not just beasts of the field; they are Motek and Varda, who have been a couple for 56 years, producing 11 children, and many more grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In honor of the recent Jewish holiday of Tu B'Av (commonly called the Jewish Valentine's Day), we share with you this dear Israeli "couple," who at ages 60 (her) and 58 (him) still lace their trunks together to stay warm on a cool day. May we all find such love and faithfulness. Shabbat shalom, friends.
