Photo Friday: Commemorated with Trumpet Blasts

Shimon Peres presents shofar to Jewish community of Azerbaijan (Photo: Amos Ben Gershom/GPO)

"...you are to have a day of sabbath rest, a sacred assembly commemorated with trumpet blasts." (Leviticus 23:24)

This week, Israel lost the last of its founding fathers, former president and prime minister Shimon Peres. And this Sunday at sundown, the Jewish people will begin their celebration of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, a day on which the shofar is sounded. In this photo from his time as president, Peres presents a shofar - the traditional trumpet made of a ram's horn - to the Jewish community in Azerbaijan. May Shimon Peres' memory be a blessing. And Shanah Tovah - Happy New Year!
