Netanyahu Calls UN Resolution on Jerusalem “Absurd”

Earlier this week, the U.N.’s cultural body, UNESCO, passed another resolution denying any Jewish ties to the city of Jerusalem. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the resolution “absurd” and anti-Semitic. However, he did note a positive change: more countries abstained or voted in support of Israel than ever before.

Also this week in Israel in the News:

  • Israel honored its fallen soldiers on Monday as the country observed Yom Hazikaron, Israel Memorial Day. Fellowship Senior Vice President Yael Eckstein spoke at a Memorial Day ceremony at the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, saying “we will never forget those who fell.”
  • As soon as Memorial Day ended, Israel then celebrated its 69th anniversary of independence with festivals and concerts throughout the country. Speaking at an Independence Day reception, Prime Minister Netanyahu vowed that “Israel is here to stay — forever.”
  • Hamas, the Palestinian terror group which runs the Gaza Strip, released a new charter that is being called “softer” because it does not call for Israel’s destruction. However, it also still does not recognize Israel’s right to exist.
  • A massive explosion at the airport in the Syrian capital of Damascus this week is being blamed on Israel. Israeli officials are neither confirming nor denying any involvement.

This week’s Israel in the News Perspective features The Fellowship’s Ami Farkas on his first trip to the holiest site in Judaism, the Temple Mount.
