During his recent visit to Brazil, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was awarded the National Order of the Southern Cross — the most prestigious medal Brazil bestows upon foreign dignitaries. Netanyahu said that there was great admiration for Israel in Brazil.

  • While in Brazil, Netanyahu also met with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who assured the prime minister that the U.S. will continue to work with Israel in the Middle East despite the recent decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria.
  • Israel and Honduras have agreed to move forward with plans to open embassies in Jerusalem and Tegucigalpa, the capital city of Honduras.
  • Both Israel and the U.S. have officially withdrawn from UNESCO, the U.N.’s educational, scientific, and cultural agency, amid concerns that the organization fosters anti-Israel bias.
  • Outgoing U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., Nikki Haley, slammed UNESCO on Twitter, calling it “among the most corrupt and politically biased U.N. agencies.”
  • The Israeli military has formed a new reserves battalion that will act as the first line of defense against the Iranian-backed terror group, Hezbollah, on Israel’s northern border.

This week’s Israel in the News Perspective features The Fellowship’s Global Executive Vice President Yael Eckstein on hopes for 2019.
