Israel celebrated its independence day this week – 70 years since the founding of the modern Jewish state, which rose in the aftermath of World War II and the Holocaust. The celebration was marked with fireworks, an official ceremony in Jerusalem, and a fly-over of fighter jets from the Israeli Air Force.

Also this week in Israel in the News:

  • As Israel celebrated her Independence Day, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took time to talk about the country’s success stories over the past 70 years.
  • U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted his support and congratulations to Israel, writing, “We have no better friends anywhere.”
  • On Israel Memorial Day, which immediately precedes Israel Independence Day, Israel honored the 23,646 soldiers killed during its many wars and the 3,134 terror victims who have died in the ongoing terrorist campaign against the Jewish state.
  • In remarks to Fellowship staff in Jerusalem, Fellowship Founder and President Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein said, “We must do good for others in memory of the souls who were willing to contribute their whole world for us. We must prove ourselves worthy of their sacrifices.”

This week’s Israel in the News Perspective features The Fellowship’s Global Executive Vice President Yael Eckstein reflecting on the great friendship that the Jewish people have with their Christian brothers and sisters.
