2 Killed as Israel/Gaza Border Protests Turn Deadly

Hundreds were injured and at least two killed as 40,000 Palestinians gathered along the Israel/Gaza border to protest the Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip, and to mark the one-year anniversary of the March of Great Return demonstrations. The protests are continuing even as Egyptian negotiators are in Gaza trying to broker a ceasefire between the two sides.

  • After 37 years, the Israeli military welcomed home the remains of Israel Defense Forces soldier Staff Sergeant Zachary Baumel, who was killed during the First Lebanon War in 1982. The remains of another dozen bodies were also uncovered and are in the process of being identified.
  • Meanwhile, Hamas is posting messages on social media, specifically taunting the families of four Israeli soldiers presently being held for ransom.
  • Israeli President Reuven Rivlin recently met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, thanking him for his efforts against anti-Semitism and other forms of anti-Israel hatred.
  • Nearly 80 years after the fall of the Nazi regime, an Old Master’s painting from 1639, stolen by the Nazis, was returned to its rightful owners, a Jewish family.

This week’s Israel in the News Perspective features the Fellowship’s President Yael Eckstein in her first tele-town hall conference call with 35,000 Fellowship donors, friends, and supporters.
