Name: Maya Fishman

Age: 16

Known for: Fishman is a first-year medical student who is on track to become Israel's youngest doctor.

About her: Maya Fishman grew up in northern Israel with her mother, and she was considered extraordinary from a very young age. She began speaking long before most children her age, and was praised often for her phenomenal memory. When she was in pre-school, she was doing so well that she skipped ahead to first grade.

Fishman knew that she wanted to be a doctor from a young age, and she worked hard at school to achieve her dreams. When she was just 14, she aced her college-entrance exams, and she was put on an accelerated track to finish high school early. At 16, she began her first year of medical school at the Hebrew University. When she graduates at age 22, she will become the youngest doctor in Israel's history.

Her mother's words: "Maya was born after years of hard life. ... I'm happy to see her living her dreams - dreams I didn't get to realize in this world. All of my life I've been treated as if I was invisible and I always told her that I want her to have this drive to be better, to achieve things, so no one could ignore her." - Shlomit Fishman
