Vera stays very busy singing in a choir, excelling in school, designing costumes, and medaling at swim meets. Her schedule and accolades would be impressive on their own, but when you learn that Vera was born with cerebral palsy and couldn’t even walk until she was 3, you realize how truly impressive this young woman is.

Alexander wishes he could follow her there – not because his family is unkind, but because of the anti-Semitism he faces in school.

Eight-year-old Elizabeth lives with her parents, two of her sisters, and paternal grandparents in a tiny apartment in Ukraine. Elizabeth sleeps with her sisters, 11-year-old Sofia and 15-year-old Alexandra, in a room lined end to end with mattresses. Thankfully, her two oldest sisters were recently awarded scholarships to study at a Jewish program in Austria. Otherwise, all five siblings would continue to sleep in their crowded room.
