Why you should know him: Giacinto Domenico Lazzarini was a legendary member of the Italian Resistance against the Nazis and fascists, and saved hundreds from the Holocaust.
During World War II, Dr. Lazzarini commanded a partisan brigade that helped the Allies in their battle against Hitler and Mussolini, fighting under the nom de guerre Fulvio Athatos. His responsibility was transporting Jews, political prisoners, and Allied prisoners of war to safety. During his work, Lazzarini never registered the names of those he rescued, and they never knew his name.
From 1942 until 1943, he worked in France, where his mother was born. In 1943, he was sent back home to Italy, where he helped transport people into neutral Switzerland. Leading groups of 50 to 100 people, he always succeeded in bringing them to freedom. Estimates of the number saved by Dr. Lazzarini are from the hundreds to 3,000. Because of his selflessness and bravery, Dr. Giacinto Domenico Lazzarini was named Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem in 1978.
