A Widow Receives Honey and Blessings for the New Year

Tatyana, 66, could use a little sweetness in her life. Since her husband passed away four years ago, Tatyana has endured many troubles. She has one daughter living in the United States, but the two rarely speak. Sadly, the widow is all alone.Despite years working as an engineer, Tatyana’s pension is only $71 a month. Her income is not enough for a healthy person to live on, let alone a woman who must pay for medication for hypertension and heart problems, along with doctor bills. The poverty is a difficult daily reality. Thankfully, just before the recent Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, Tatyana received a sweet treat from The Fellowship: a food package complete with the traditional honey Jews eat on this holiday. She was able to participate in the traditional dipping of apples in honey, a Jewish custom that is meant to bring in a “sweet” new year.“I want to thank The Fellowship for the help they give me,” says Tatyana. “With Rosh Hashanah, this honey is very precious to me. I hope that the coming year will be a happy one, and that all the bad will become part of the past. Rosh Hashanah is the beginning of the New Year, and marked with happy events.” For this elderly widow, one of those happy events was receiving thoughtful care from Christians and Jews around the world. She is so grateful to know she is not all alone after all.
