Artem, his siblings, and their single mother had a hard enough time getting by before a fire destroyed all the possessions in their home in Ukraine. Irina, Artem’s mom, has no money and no professional training that would help her earn a living for her and her three children.
Her ex-husband was an alcoholic who beat her and the children. He wasted any money he earned at his minimum-wage job on alcohol and cigarettes. While in many respects life was better after he left, the family’s financial situation went from bad to worse. And then the fire made the situation even more hopeless.
Artem, his sister Darina, and his brother Cyril suffer from chronic malnutrition and do not have clothes that fit and keep them warm enough in winter. After the fire, they went to live in one room in their uncle’s house, where the three children share one mattress on the floor.
A member of the local Jewish community told The Fellowship about the family’s dire situation and we immediately responded with help.
When Irina opened the door to a representative of The Fellowship delivering a large food package, the look on her face was indescribable. “I don’t know how to thank you,” she gushed, tears streaming down her cheeks. “It’s a mother’s worst nightmare to watch her children go hungry and cold.
“You have taken care of my family and eased my heavy burden. I am deeply grateful for the love and generosity of Rabbi Eckstein and The Fellowship.”
As the family rebuilds their life, The Fellowship’s monthly food packages and provision of warm clothing before the harsh winter offer a needed ray of hope.
